Brazil’s largest city, São Paulo, continues struggling to maintain its already depleted water supply amid the effects of a severe drought and indiscriminate usage. Facing critical water levels, the government has resorted to tapping its reserve supply and issuing fines to consumers for wasteful water usage. Local officials estimate the city’s main reservoir, Cantareira, is at a supply level of about 15%, and could be depleted in the next three months before water levels rise again in the Spring.
