Govt Seeks $5 Bln In 4G Mobile Bidding Set For Sept. 30

Brazil’s government will hold an auction for fourth generation, or “4G,” mobile telecom service on September 30, the country’s telecom regulatory agency Anatel said.  The agency said the government has set the minimum amount to be paid for six concessions of the 700 MHz signal range at $5.3 billion, of which approximately $3.4 billion will go directly to government coffers. At least four of the concession areas will be sold at a minimum price of $850 million each.  Local mobile operators TIM, Claro, Oi and Vivo are expected to participate in the auction. Bidders in the auction will be required to submit their offers by Sept. 23. The government decided to hold the auctions this year to promote modernization of the country’s telecom network and respond to complaints about low telecom sector investment and poor service in the country.  Economists, meanwhile, expect the auction could also help the government offset current low revenues and help narrow a growing public sector budget deficit.
