Brazil’s government sold only 4 of 6 700 MHz fourth-generation broadband concessions on auction Tuesday to raise R$5.8 billion, telecom regulatory agency Anatel said. The first three lots on offer, permitting nationwide operations, were purchased at just above the minimum price of R$1.9 billion each by mobile operators Claro, Tim and Vivo. Another lot covering areas of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goias and Mato Grosso, was sold to Algar Telecom for R$29 million. The government had hoped to raise up to R$7.7 billion with the sale of the concessions, but at least two the lots on offer went unsold. Earlier this month, one of Brazil’s major telecom operators, Oi, announced it would not participate in this week’s auction, saying it preferred to use 2.5 GHz and 1.8GHz networks to meet its service expansion requirements in coming years.
