Telefonica To Buy GVT From Vivendi For $9 Billion

Spanish telecom Telefonica will purchase controlling stake in Brazilian broadband telecom operator GVT from GVT’s French parent Vivendi for $9 billion, the companies said. Telefonica will pay $6 billion in cash and will pay for the rest with a transfer of its own shares and shares of its stake in Telecom Italia. Analysts said the move is part of possible expansion efforts of Telefonica in Brazil and of Vivendin in Italy. In addition to acquiring GVT, Telefonica is seen with sites on broadening its share of the Brazilian market with a possible purchase of Telecom Italia’s local mobile operator TIM. Such a deal, however, could depend on the participation of Brazilian telecom players Oi and Claro. Telefonica’s purchase of GVT, meanwhile, is subject to approval by Brazilian telecom regulatory agency Anatel.
