Brazil’s industrial employment fell for a fourth consecutive month in July under the influence of fewer working days during the month, the IBGE statistics institute reported Wednesday. The IBGE said industrial employment declined by 0.7% during the period, bringing a decline of 2.6% for the January to July period. Industrial employment was down 3.6% from the same month in 2013. Part of July’s decline, the IBGE said, was due to work slowdowns prompted by the country’s hosting of the World Cup soccer championship. Also during July, hours worked were down by 0.3% from June and by 3.1% for the January to July period. The latest figures come as Brazil struggles to restart growth in a period of adverse conditions. The IBGE in August reported that Brazil’s economy contracted by 0.6% in the second quarter, putting the country into recession. According to recent central bank market surveys, Brazil’s economy is seen expanding by 0.5% in 2014 after growth of 2.3% in 2013.
