Rousseff Says Mantega To Exit If She Is Re-elected

Brazil’s Finance Minister Guido Mantega will not stay on in the cabinet if President Dilma Rousseff wins re-election in October, the president said Monday. Speaking in an interview with Brazilian newspaper Estado de S. Paulo, Ms. Rousseff said that Minister Mantega had requested to step down from the post at the end of the current term. “He communicated that he wouldn’t be able to stay in the government during a second term for personal reasons, which I ask that you respect,” the president reportedly said. Brazil’s Finance Ministry didn’t comment on the remarks.  The declaration Monday comes only days after Ms. Rousseff at a campaign appearance said that she would overhaul her cabinet if she were re-elected. The government has come under strong pressure from investors and political allies to make changes in its economic advisory team in the wake of recent disappointing performance of the country’s economy.  Brazil’s economy contracted 0.6% in the second quarter of the year, putting the country into a recession.  At the same time, the country has run12-month inflation at the 6.5% upper limit of its official inflation targeting band, forcing the central bank to maintain its base Selic interest rate at an elevated level of 11% annually. According to the central bank’s latest market surveys, the country is seen growing only about 0.5% this year, while inflation is seen ending 2014 at around 6.3%. Brazil is scheduled to hold a first round presidential election on Oct. 5.
