Brazil’s population has reached 202 million according to the latest IBGE census institute estimate, up 0.8% from the figure released last year. The census report released Thursday said the country’s population rose by 1.7 million from last year, when it surpassed the 200 million mark for the first time. According to the latest figures, São Paulo is Brazil’s most populous state, with 44 million residents. Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro were second and third with 21 million and 16 million residents, respectively. The state with the smallest population is Roraima, with 496,000 residents. Among cities, São Paulo registered the largest population, at 11.8 million, while Rio de Janeiro was second, with 6.5 million. Under Brazilian law, the country’s census estimates are revised each year to help determine federal budget transfers to local governments. While the population has grown less than 1%, analysts have questioned whether the economy will expand by that much. According to Brazil’s latest central bank market survey, the country’s economy is seen growing by only about 0.7% this year.
